About this Kata

Genwa Ichi no Kata is the first of the Genwa series. This kata allows the student to progress from the four directional turns of the Shiho kata to combining turns and steps for fast strong linear movements. The emphasis in Genwa Ichi no Kata is on offensive techniques.

Instructions

  1. After Yoi turn your head 90º to the left and step out to the left with your left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a Kiai. At the same time block with left Gedan Barai.

  2. After Gedan Barai, step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. At the same time execute a right Chudan Tsuki.

  3. Quickly look to the right (and over your shoulder, focusing behind you) and make a 180º turn to the right by bringing your right foot to the left foot (keeping your hips low) and forming Zenkutsu Dachi by continuing to step forward with the right foot. At the same time execute a right Gedan Barai.

  4. Step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a left Chudan Tsuki.

  5. Look 90º to the left, bring your left foot back to your right foot then step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a left Gedan Barai.

  6. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a right Chudan Tsuki.

  7. Step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a left Chudan Tsuki.

  8. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a right Chudan Tsuki and Kiai.

  9. Quickly look over your left shoulder. Using your left leg, make a 270º turn into Zenkutsu Dachi while looking over your left shoulder. Execute a left Gedan Barai.

    1. Keep your right knee bent during the turn while making a sweeping/cresent motion with the left leg.
  10. Execute a right Mae Geri. As you step down into Zenkutsu Dachi, execute a right Chudan Tsuki.

  11. Quickly turn your head 180º to the right. Move the right foot to the left foot and then turn 180º and step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. As you turn, execute a right Gedan Barai.

  12. Execute a left Mae Geri. As you land into Zenkutsu Dachi, execute a left Chudan Tsuki.

  13. Look to the left. Turning 90º bring your left foot back to your right foot and then out into Zenkutsu Dachi. At the same time execute Morote Gedan Barai.

  14. Keeping your hands at Morote Gedan Barai level, step forward with a right Mae Geri.

  15. Keeping your hands at Morote Gedan Barai level, step forward with a left Mae Geri.

  16. Keeping your hands at Morote Gedan Barai level, step forward with a right Mae Geri and Kiai.

  17. Quickly look over your left shoulder. Using your left leg, make a 270º turn into Zenkutsu Dachi while looking over your left shoulder. Execute a left Gedan Barai.

  18. Execute a right Mae Geri. As you land into Zenkutsu Dachi, execute a right Chudan Tsuki.

  19. Quickly turn your head 180º to the right. Move the right foot to the left foot and then turn 180º and step forward with the right foot into a right Zenkutsu Dachi. As you turn execute a right Gedan barai.

  20. Execute a left Mae Geri. As you land execute a left Chudan Tsuki.

  21. Look to the left. Turning 90º bring your left foot back to your right foot and then out into Zenkutsu Dachi. At the same time execute a left Gedan Barai.

  22. Step forward with your right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi and execute a right Chudan Tsuki and Kiai.

  23. After pausing a little, step back with the right foot into Hachiji Dachi and bring both hands back into Hikite. Very deliberately lower your hands to your front and at the same time move your left foot to the right foot. Bring your hands up to Morote Gedan Barai position and execute a deliberate Morote Gedan Barai. At the same time separate the balls of your feet at a 90º angle. Naote.
