About this Kata

Genwa Ni no Kata is the second of the Genwa series. This kata allows the student to progress from the four directional turns of the Shiho kata, to combining turns and steps for fast strong linear movements. The emphasis in Genwa Ni no Kata is on defensive techniques.

Instruction

  1. After Yoi, look sharply 90º to the left.

  2. Facing the 90º Step back with your right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with left Gedan Barai with a Kiai.

  3. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a right Chudan Tsuki.

  4. Quickly look to your right (the opponent is behind you), use your right foot to turn which is at a 180º to the right into Zenkutsu Dachi with a right Gedan Barai.

    1. Keep low while you're turing.
  5. Step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a left Chudan Tsuki.

  6. Step back with your left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with a right Soto Uke.

  7. Look 90º to the left, draw your right foot to the left foot while facing in the direction that you are looking, step back into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a left Uchi Uke.

  8. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a right Chudan Tsuki.

  9. Step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with left Chudan Tsuki and a right Chudan Gyaku Tsuki, (Chudan Ni Ren Tsuki).

  10. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Do a left Chudan Gyaku Tsuki with a Kiai.

  11. Look 90º to the right, draw your left foot to the right foot while turing your body to face the direction you are looking, then step back into Zenkutsu Dachi with right Gedan Barai.

  12. Step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a left Chudan Tsuki.

  13. Quickly turn your head 180º to the left. Move the left foot to the right foot and step forward (in the direction that you are looking) with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a left Gedan Barai.

  14. Step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a right Chudan Tsuki.

  15. Step back with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with left Soto Uke.

  16. Look 90º to the right, draw your left foot to the right foot and turn face the direction that you are looking, step back with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Execute a right Uchi Uke.

  17. Step back with your right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with a left Age Uke.

  18. Step back with your left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with a right Age Uke.

  19. Quickly turn your head 45º to the left. Turn your body in the direction that you are looking and step back with your right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with a left Shuto Uke.

  20. With the Shuto Uke still in place, step forward with the right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi and do a right Soto Uke*.

    1. *The blocking surface of Soto Uke will hit the open hand of Shuto uke.

  21. Execute a right Jodan Tsuki then a left Chudan Gyaku Tsuki.

    1. This should be done as a Ni Ren Tsuki.

  22. Look 90º to the right, draw your right foot to the left foot, turn your body to face the direction that you are looking and step forward with your right foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. Block with a right Shuto Uke.

  23. With the Shuto Uke still in place, step forward with the left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi with a left Soto Uke*.

    1. *The blocking surface of Soto Uke will hit the open hand of Shuto Uke.

  24. Execute a left Jodan Tsuki and a right Chudan Gyaku Tsuki.

    1. This should be done as a Ni Ren Tsuki.

  25. Step back with your left foot into Zenkutsu Dachi. At the same time do a right Gedan Barai.

  26. Look 45º to your left, draw your right foot to the left foot while turning your body to face the direction that you are looking


    and Naote.
